Horticultural Research Assistant

Horticultural research is carried out by both educational institutions government and private organisations. Research is commonly carried out by Research scientists, managed by senior scientists and assisted by research assistants.

Often people start out as research assistants and progress to become scientists over time.

Typical Jobs

Research assistants often carry out the more routine tasks to assist the scientist. These tasks may involve such things as:

  • Managing, maintaining and cleaning equipment and materials needed for experiments.
  • Collecting data (eg. counting results such as the number of successes in an experiment)
  • Collecting materials (eg samples of plant tissues)
  • Preparing samples (eg. different concentrates)
  • Routine checking of a trial or experiment
  • Monitoring and recording climatic conditions data on a regular basis

Remuneration and Advancement Opportunities

The experience gained as a research assistant can be invaluable for anyone wishing to progress to become a scientist. There is little doubt that someone who has worked as a research assistant has an increased likelihood of success as a scientist, compared with someone who is employed fresh from university.

Risks & Stresses

Sometimes the chemicals and conditions worked with are unknown factors; so safety protocols are very important if risks are to be minimised.

Research is often subject to funding decisions made by politicians and bureaucrats. It is always possible that a research program can loose funding and jobs can disappear with little notice.

How to Distinguish Yourself from the Competition

Study a different combination of modules or a different course. Be sure to only study courses that enhance your ability to think laterally -something that is critical for success in research.

Recommended Courses

Start with a certificate (600 hours) or higher course in applied biology or horticulture; but be sure there is a strong science component to the course. Some horticulture courses are stronger with science than others. Even diplomas can be very weak on science at some schools.

Be sure to develop an understanding of basic botany, cell biology, biochemistry, statistics and research methods.

Be prepared to upgrade to at least a diploma eventually and maybe a degree.
