Psychology is an increasingly popular subject for students to study. There are so many different options from which to continue after completing a psychology course. At the moment, only a small percentage of psychology graduates continue to become professional psychologists. However, as the field is expanding more and more students are becoming professionals within the field.

There are many different areas of psychology, such as educational psychology, occupational psychology, criminological and legal psychology, psychology teaching and research. Each of these fields have different careers, pay and prospects within them. Some offer full time work, others only part time. Some offer consultancy and freelance work, whilst in others the psychologist is employed.

There is some degree of overlap between specialisms, for example, clinical psychologists and educational psychologists may both work with children with mental health problems. Occupational and clinical psychologists may both work with people in prisons. Some careers also overlap with other professions, such as psychiatry and counseling.

Different People have Different Temperaments

Most adults have witnessed the considerable differences in temperament between different new born babies. Some babies seem to cry or become irritable at the slightest provocation, causing many sleepless nights for parents. Others seem much more amiable, always smiling and hardly ever crying. Many mothers tell you that they have raised both types. Is this evidence of an inborn hereditary personality trait; or is it merely coincidence?

If such personality tendencies are stable - that is, they continue to exist throughout the child's development - then it is often assumed that the characteristic is hereditary. Investigations have found that 70 per cent of adults with behaviour disorders were described as difficult babies by their parents. This can be interpreted in two ways:

  • A difficult temperament is inborn and remains stable throughout life, eventually leading to behavioural problems (nature).
  • Difficult babies are treated differently by their parents, who perhaps elicit negative responses, which cause these to children have socially related difficulties later. The later behavioural disorders are a response to negative treatments which in turn resulted from the difficulty they caused as babies.

It has been found that mothers do not generally rear difficult babies very differently to others, but as children get older, parents do often respond more with negative behaviours such as shame, anxiety, or guilt, if these difficulties persist. The temperament of difficult babies has been found to be relatively easy to modify under appeasing parental care and conditions. Children's temperaments moreover, were found to often change considerably during their early years. It can be concluded that while temperament may be genetically influenced, it is easily modified by environmental factors.

There has been evidence however that certain personality traits may be largely influenced by genetic factors. These are sociability, stimulus seeking and activity.

Opportunities

There are a limited number of job opportunities to work in pure psychology; but an endless range of opportunities for people to use a knowledge of psychology in business or the workplace.

  • If you want to work with people -managing them, teaching them, selling things to them, or helping them; this course provides a fantastic starting point for developing a business, getting a job or enhancing your career opportunities.

  • If you want to work in pure psychology, as a counsellor or psychologist; this course is a great place to start (but you may need to keep studying other courses, and building work experience, well beyond an initial diploma; if you are to secure a sustainable long term career).

Most graduates in psychology actually end up working outside of pure psychology. Even people who have degrees and higher level qualifications at university; are more likely to find work in areas such as welfare services, health, employment services, personnel management, business or education; than what they are to find work as a psychologist. To succeed today in such professions, requires more than just a qualification though. The ability to do the job, the right personality (eg. empathetic), experience, networking skills and a broad knowledge are all equally important. Graduates from a diploma who have all these other things, are often more attractive to an employer than graduates from a Masters Degree who don't.
