Chemistry is a major part of many industries, from pharmaceuticals to farm pesticides; and food science to mining and manufacturing. A fundamental understanding of chemistry is advantageous to many jobs and absolutely vital to others. Most such jobs though are not what you might think. The jobs that are available for chemists, pharmacists and biochemists may require university qualifications; but for every one of those jobs there are many others that involve manufacturing, marketing or using chemicals. Pharmacists employ sales assistants, who do need to understand the medicines hey deal with. Research scientists employ lab or research assistants. Farmers employ spray contractors. Veterinarians employ vet assistants. These and many other jobs are easier to get and easier to do when you understand chemistry.
